Understanding the German Brutto-Netto Paycheck

Germany boasts one of Europe's strongest economies, but working in Germany involves one of the most comprehensive social security and taxation frameworks in the world.

The gap between your Brutto (Gross Salary) and Netto (Net Take-Home Salary) typically ranges from 35% to 48%, split between income tax (Lohnsteuer), the solidarity surcharge, optional church tax, and mandatory social insurance contributions (Sozialabgaben).

German Tax Classes (Steuerklassen 1 bis 6) Explained

In Germany, every employee is assigned to one of six Steuerklassen (Tax Classes) depending on marital and family status:

Steuerklasse 2Single parents entitled to the relief allowance (Entlastungsbetrag für Alleinerziehende).Lower monthly withholding than Class 1.
Steuerklasse 3Married / civil partners where one partner is the sole or primary earner.Lowest tax withholding (full double allowance).
Steuerklasse 4Married couples with roughly equal earnings (Default for married couples).Identical to Class 1 for both partners.
Steuerklasse 5Married partner whose spouse is in Steuerklasse 3 (Secondary earner).High withholding on the lower salary.
Steuerklasse 6Secondary jobs or side employment with another employer.Highest tax rate from €1 (No tax-free allowance).

German Income Tax Rates (§ 32a EStG) & Grundfreibetrag (2025/2026)

The German income tax curve uses progressive mathematical formulas across progressive tax zones:

  • Progressive Zone 1: Entry rate begins at 14.0% and rises linearly to 24.0%.
  • Progressive Zone 2: Rates rise from 24.0% to 42.0% (for taxable income up to ~€66,760).
  • Top Rate (Spitzensteuersatz): 42.0% on taxable income between €66,761 and €277,825.

  1. Church Tax (Kirchensteuer): If registered with the Catholic or Protestant church, you pay 8% of your income tax liability in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, or 9% in all other German federal states. You can opt out by officially deregistering (Kirchenaustritt) at the local Standesamt.
  2. Solidarity Surcharge (Soli): The 5.5% solidarity surcharge has been abolished for ~90% of taxpayers. It only applies to high earners whose annual income tax liability exceeds statutory exemption thresholds (€18,130 for singles).
